Pair of 19th century trammel points

These just in from bridgebuilder pal Will Truax, currently rehabbing a lovely little bridge in the wild regions of Maryland with Tim Andrews and friends.

Trammel points are found in such numbers that they were obviously a very common layout tool used for a variety of tasks, including swing arcs for developed geometry and in all likelihood they were used to make long story poles for timber layout. Currently plumbline scribers often use them in deep layups.

This is particularly fine example large enough for timberwork, they include a 20” beam, though both cursors have a set screw and could be fixed to a longer piece of round stock. No makers mark, but of probable 19th ca. manufacture – The framing square is in the image to provide perspective
